Dari Department

The Department of Dari Language and Literature was established at the establishment of the Faculty of Literature and Humanities and the University of Herat in the 1988. The department, the first department at Herat University, started its first year of study with twenty-five male and female students selected from among the students of the Herat Institute of Information Science. At the beginning of the training, professors such as Abdul Razzaq Najomi Monajamzadeh, Seyyed Noor-al-Haq Saba, Abdul Salam Hazim and Maleko Jān as the main statuary of this department, and Abdul Ahad Saghari and one of two other professors from the Institute of Information Science as the teacher assistants of this department started to teach in accordance to Kabul Faculty of Dari Language and Literature’s curriculum. The academic board of the Faculty of Literature was founded in 1368 with four members: Abdol Razaq Ayummi Monajamzadeh, Seyyed Noor-al-Haq Saba, Abdul Salam Hazim and Maliko jan. 

The main subjects taught in this department up to the eighth semester are the history of Dari literature, poetry and prose, grammar (Phonology and Syntax), Linguistics (general linguistics, anatomical linguistics, historical linguistics, comparative study, Semantics, terminology), literary techniques (exegesis, expression, rhetoric and eloquence), literature theory, literary stylistics, literary criticism, mystical literature, and sociology.

In the year 1990, with the joining of two prominent members of the Academy of Sciences of Afghanistan Mohammad Nasser Rahiab and the late Pohniyar Mohammad Masoud Rajaei, the faculty academic board was strengthen, and the presence of the four experienced faculty members of the Department of Language and Dari literature, the faculty was well-equipped and highly skilled. In the year 1991, with the absorption of the first two graduates of this faculty, the number of faculty members in the faculty grew to eight. The first graduates of this department were ten in the year 1991.

The Department of Dari Language and Literature has already introduced 25 rounds of graduates to the community with bachelor's degree and has accepted some of its high-qualified graduates in the Department’s Academic Board.

The professors of this department are doctoral and master's degree and have the highest academic rank.

In 2013, a night shift undergraduate program started within the department.

In 2015, the Department of Dari Language and Literature received the credit to start its Master's Degree Program and absorbed some of the graduates of the Dari Literature Department, Department of Language and Dari at the Faculty of Education, and Arabic Department graduates. So far, it has been annually recruiting undergraduate students.

The department has 12 members of scientific staff with degrees of doctoral, master's degree, bachelor's degree, and academic degrees of Pohand, Pohandoi, Pohanmal and Pohanyaar.

Graduates of the Department of Dari Language and Literature

During the years 1991 to 2018, 744 graduates, including 444 men and 300 women, have graduated from this department.

Present number of students

Currently in 2019, about 326 students are studying at this department among these students 114 are male and 212 are female.
