Introduction

Faculty of economics, with the purpose of educating and training professional cadres in economic and management fields, has been established in the frame of Herat University in 1990. For success and sustainability in a dynamic and volatile environment, an organizations needs to have clear perspective and plans in the future. Therefore in order to fulfill the aforementioned purpose and empowering the role and position of the faculty in the academic society, preparing and compilation a strategic plan is one of most important needs. Based on the special geographical location of Herat province, extension and development of scientific and academic activities of the faculty, quantitatively and qualitatively, can have significant impacts and effects on the country’s economy and academic society.

The faculty has four departments including Macroeconomic, Business Administration, Financed & Banking and Trade Departments. In addition, faculty’s academic research & quality control center, academic council, lecturer council, discipline committee and exam committee also work under the frame of faculty. As of Feb 2015, 756 students are being lectured by 22 academic Cadres and 7 more professors are gaining their PhD degree in Germany, Turkey and Iran countries. Since its foundation, 1620 students have graduated and have entered to the country’s labor market as economy and management professionals. The Faculty of Economics and Management is going to start the Master of Business Administration (MBA) program and Associate Degree in Business Administration in 2017 with cooperation of USAID.

Vision

Improving the position of the Faculty of Economics to the great and first faculty among all economics faculty of Afghan’s Universities till 2018.

Key and Core Values

The faculty of economics, for setting up its goals, objectives, expectations and organizational performance norms and measurements, has relied on numbers of important and key values. These values would be the frontispieces of the faculty in preparing its plans and performances. The key values, in which the faculty is committed to comply them, are as following:

Mission

Based on the aforementioned vision, the faculty has integrated its philosophy of existence and performance inside its mission. The faculty has taken in to account the important factors for responding to the needs and main issues of key stakeholders (internal and external) in its mission statement;

  • Preparation of needed professional human resources of the country in economics and management fields
  • Academic cooperation with related governmental and non-governmental organizations in implementing development plans of the country
  • Enhancing quality and quantity of educational services for demanders, with observing the national and international standards

Goals and Objectives

These objectives of the faculty covers the quad core strategies of education (studying), research, interaction with the community and administration and human resources. The objectives are as following:

  • Objectives related to the educational strategy
    • Offering scientific – educational services at the highest level to the students and other demanders
    • Preparing educational and studying facilities for personal growth and development in the faculty
    • Enhancing the level of education (degrees) and academic grades of the faculty’s lecturers
    • Providing the possibility of study in the level of master degree for the faculty’s graduates
    • Getting and benefiting from most advanced supplementary equipment and technologies
  • Objectives related to the research strategy
    • Enhancing the faculty’s research and analytical capabilities
    • Improving promotion of scientific and research activities, relevant to the faculty’s departments
  • Objectives related to strategy of the role of the faculty in the community
    • Maintenance and empower the position of the faculty in the community
    • Providing the possibilities of active presence of organizations, entrepreneurs and professional individuals in the faculty

Policies and Strategies

Policies and strategies play a pivotal role in decision making processes. Therefore, they have a great importance. Identification of these policies and strategies is one of the most important phase for the participants of the strategic planning team and it can be considered as the heart of that planning process. The faculty’s policies and strategies are as follow:

At the present, the number of lecturers of Economics Faculty are 22 persons, which 7 of them are studying doctoral and postgraduate studies in Germany, Turkey and the Islamic Republic of Iran.
