Introduction of Law and Political Science Faculty

The Faculty of Law and Political Science was established in 2002, including 71 male and female students, as an academic and specialized faculty for propagation the culture of law jurisdiction and civility of experts (lawyers, politicians, judges, attorney generals, attorneys, and public service experts). Students of this faculty should take 8 semesters (4 years) for a bachelor degree. The faculty is consists of the following four departments: Department of Public Law, Department of International Relations, Department of Private Law, and Department of Criminal Law.
Current students of the Faculty of Law and Political Science are categorized after taking Kankor examination. The fields in the faculty include the Attorney-General and Diplomacy. In addition to the departments, Herat University's Legal Clinic, the Center for the Rule of Law and Human Rights and the English and French Language Training Centers also provide services to enhance practical knowledge and language skills of students and teachers. The faculty and administration of this faculty is led by the dean, deputy, teaching management office, the departments, the center of the rule of law and the legal clinic.
Organization and Manpower:

 The faculty has four departments (public law, international relations, private law, criminal law, and criminal sciences), which is sponsored by the Ministry of Higher Education. Equipment and Facilities:

  • A proper building that belongs to the faculty itself and if all the sections are transferred to the law and political science faculty, the problems on lack of place will be completely solved.

  • The classrooms are equipped with chairs, whiteboards and projectors, but they do not have heating and cooling systems.

  • Examinations, quality assurance, publications and research, scholarships, discipline, and curriculum committees are working in this faculty. Of course, the activities of quality assurance and exams committees are more prominent.

  • In the dedicated library of this faculty, there are about 10,000 books including 8,000 books in the field of law, administration and politics and 2000 volumes of general books. Of the above books, 1,200 volumes of legal and political books are in English and about 1,000 volumes of jurisprudential and legal texts are in Arabic.
  •    A study room is equipped with the necessary facilities at the second floor of the Law and Political Science Faculty for students to better use of their leisure time.
  •   Equipped rooms for seminars, workshops, allegorical trials and scientific discourses
  • Two rooms are equipped with 42 computer systems for male and female students.
  • Legal Clinic: Since 2009, it has been working as a practical legal training center for students, as well as a center for providing free legal defense services for the poor, counseling and legal awareness.
  • Center for the Rule of Law and Human Rights: It was established in 2012 with the cooperation of Public-Private Partnership Organization and United States of America to create the concept of rule of law, the creation of a law-abiding society, efforts to reduce administrative corruption and provide professional advice to government departments.
  • Unofficial Justice Clinic or ADR: This clinic has been operating with the United States Institute for Peace for more than a year. During this period, it was able to inform a number of village councils on the legal basis for resolving disputes, and familiarized themselves with the conventional ways of resolving disputes.
  • Herat University Legal Education Center: In the past two years, preparatory work has been carried out to establish this center in order to provide capacity-building programs and legal entities to western zone during the 2015 academic year.
  • French Language Training Center: This Center has been working with financial and technical assistance of the French Embassy's Cultural Section to teach French as a general and law specialized for almost four years.
  • Legal English Language Education Center: This Center has been working with the financial support of the Institute for the Establishment of Legal Governance (DPK) in the field of Legal English Language Education for professors and students of this faculty since 2006.
  • Sports and Recreation Activities: Students of this educational institution work in the field of sports, including football, volleyball and chess. Scientific and recreational activities, especially for female students and students outside Herat province, are among other activities that are practicable in this faculty.
  • The Association of Students of the Faculty of Law and Political Science also co-ordinates the participation of all male and female students in scientific, cultural and recreational activities
  • Other scientific and practical activities: Participation in parody trials, such as the Jessup General International Law, media rights and commercial arbitration known as the Vis Moot Court Competition. The Faculty of Law and Political Sciences at Herat University has had the best possible result over the past three years in the national and international competitions

It is worth to mention that teachers and students of this faculty, as well as other members of the Herat University, can freely use the services of Herat University's central library, libraries of other faculties, sports fields and other services provided by the University of Herat.

Introduction of Committees

Examination Committee:

The committee has been active in this faculty since the foundation of the Faculty until this day, and has undertaken tasks such as conducting transparent, fair examinations, meeting the exam questions with academic standards and addressing the problems faced by students during the exams.

Quality Assurance Committee:

This committee has been established under the Ministry of Higher Education policy to improve the quality of its teaching and its upward trend, and to establish a standardized teaching system with accepted scientific standards.

Order and Discipline Committee:

This committee has been established to follow the disciplinary subjects of the Faculty of Law and Political Science.

Committee for Research and Publications:

The committee has been working to regulate publications related to the publication of scientific articles and scholarship within the framework of this faculty.

Scholarship Committee:

This committee works in the framework of this faculty for the fair distribution of scholarships for undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD degrees.

Student statistics

      By the end of 2016, the Law and Political Science Faculty of Herat University graduated 1194 students from this institution. These graduates are now in different positions from chairman posts to the officer. At present, the faculty of law and political science at the University has 649 students, of which 271 are women and 378 other are men from all the around the country.
